Incantation Again by nachtwulf Incantation Again by nachtwulf
Why yes, I do love really obscure games.

Fanart of Koudelka, from the game of the same name (which to those that might know, is the prequel to Shadow Hearts). This was actually a redraw, initially, of a piece of rendered art from the game, but the render relied on the old 1998 FMV engine, and the way she was sitting was unnatural. That and I didn't like her expression... Koudelka is so jaded and unshakeable; the extremely worried/paranoid look on her face in the render didn't seem to fit her at all. Sooooo, I redid it. Moved the candlestick closer and redesigned it... I also decided somewhere along the line that I remembered her with sleeves, only to remember /afterward/ that they were attached to her jacket (which she wasn't wearing in the render pic). Soooo...um. Mine's wearing detached sleeves, for...no real good canon reason. But hey, it looks good, right?

Filed in TradArt, since the pencil is where all the time went.
(The title is drawn from the OST; 'Incantation Again' is the boss fight music, and my favorite track from the game.)

Great work!
And yes, Incantation is a great song! The song Dead is nice as well if you are into string instruments. (which I am! yayz)

i'm playing through the game now, after having played Shadow Hearts 1 & 2 (and being nearly done with 3). One hell of a game, I'm really enjoying it :3

You did an incredible job with this. The lighting, the expression and the pose... just awesome! great job!! :+fav:

You have 3 already?!

Bah. (Well, I can't read Japanese anyway, so even if I had a tweaked system, it wouldn't do me any good.)

Tell me... is it as goofy as it looks? x_x I thought SH2 was kind of pushing the silly-bar, for me... I liked 1, and I like Koudelka (the plot, anyway) a -lot-. 3 looks neat, and I'm sure I'll play it and enjoy it, but I dunno... it looks so.... perky.

it's a lot like 2 in that sense... my Japanese is pretty awful though, so most of the stuff goes over my head, but the general light atmosphere, the bounding humor and silly/quirky characters. It sucks, because the story itself is pretty dark... had they taken a different route with the character design, environments, and so on (to achieve something more like Koudelka or SH1), then it really could be just as good as those. Even better than SH2, which relied more upon inter-character drama than on a truly dark storyline.

It's annoying... I have mixed feelings about it. I wish they'd just snap out of it and stop making it appeal to preppy anime fans and return to its roots: the deranged, the grotesque, the abnormal... at least the monsters still retain those qualities! I swear, whoever that monster designer is, he needs to take the reigns if there's ever another! Seriously... I dare say the monster designs themselves are worth it! ;o;

Sorry if this was a little long-winded ^^;

No, long-winded is fine, I -did- ask. And I had noticed that the environments seemed uncharacteristically bright compared to the monster designs... SH2 was -mostly- okay, I mean, the majority of the dungeons were appropriately creepy. SH3 seems to be lacking even that much atmosphere, but the soundtrack and the monsters alike are actually closer in a lot of ways to SH1.

What I /really/ wish is that they'd remake Koudelka. With a decent combat engine. (They can use the Judgement Ring, even!) And without all the interfighting that messed it up the first time around. Koudelka was /good/, damn it. But the graphics were chunky and the combat system made me cry.

Definitely. SH2 had some pretty typical monsters, though the descriptions of the monsters were just as impressive as the ones in the prior ones (which is one of the things I wish Koudelka had, too). The soundtrack is interesting... although not bad by any means, it actually wasn't composed by the guy who did the first two Shadow Hearts games. I haven't spent much time with the OST (i'm waiting until i beat the game), but so far, Shadow Hearts is my favorite OST. The fucking bells, man :heart:

I'm not having too much difficulty with the combat system, actually. It's a little annoying, but it works. Edward the tank, Koudelka with attack magic, and O'Flaherty with the support. The right equipment on, and you really don't have much of a problem... but the equipment you get is pretty random, after all ^^; I agree it would be awesome to remake it, and maybe combine the Judgement Ring, but make it a bit faster paced...

Oh, the Judgement Ring system in SH3 is perfect. it's amazing, and fights are actually considerably challenging many times. One of the greatest things about it is the system :D though I miss the characters from past games... the only people I've seen is Lenny and Roger Bacon, which is nothing compared to the previous games (Koudelka assisting Yuri through most of SH, and Kato...). I figured if it took place in America, we should at least see Halley or Edward, if not the whole family ;o;

I guess i'm not finished with the game yet, either... ^^;

Eee, very pretty. I've wanted to play Koudelka for quite a while, actually, but never could find it anywhere. ._.

It's hard to find, but it can be found if you keep a keen eye on the used racks. If you do find a copy, it'll probably be only 8 bucks. Hell, if I see one, I can pick it up for you (but you can't have my copy! XD )

Ach, that would be awesome if you could! XD It'd be best if I could find it myself, of course, but I don't visit game stores often enough to keep close track of the used copies, usually--and another pair of eyes is always good. Pay you back, of course, but I imagine even with shipping that wouldn't be much. :D
